Nomads – “Falling Down”

Masakiri – “Egoism In Harvest”

Discommand – “War Is Terror”

“Egoism” is very much in harvest these days, reality is more complex than it ever has been and our ability to understand reality is as poor as it ever has been, we’re addicted to entertainments and silly myths about our own greatness. Fighting wars might force people call you “great,” but wars do not make you great.

For America to really become great, America will have to renounce every bit of its white supremacist identity that dehumanizes people and legitimizes racist oppression, the oppression of women, the oppression of immigrants, the oppression of any group. For America to become great, it will have to beat its swords and weapons into plowshares and give up on the imperial military agenda that ruins nations and calls the death of innocent noncombatants “collateral damage.” For America to become great, it will have to abandon its utterly bankrupt quote-unquote “capitalist” ideology that systematically robs the poor and gives to the rich, that unjustly “privatizes” public goods and public spaces, that hypnotizes us and bribes us with fantasies, and imprisons us with meaningless work.

Humanity, Equality, Community, Peace. Then your America will be great.

Phobocosm – “Knives In The Senate House”

Indian – “Rhetoric of No”

Diamanda Galas – “You Don’t Know What Love Is”

The Trump presidency is just the next chapter in the saga of the Age of Terror (which as Baudrillard and others have shown is also the age of the Simulation, the media spectacle). The primal image replaces the real event and achieves infinite recursion, it simulates reality and replaces reality the way a virus replaces your DNA.  Things from caves that make you sick.  Screens, internet reality, “viral” videos and memes. Symptoms include moral myopia, uncontrollable rage, and instrumentalized video-game-thought; if all reality is terror it must recede even in its insistence.  This alienation from reality results in a frustration with reality, a mutated image of the self, rejection of reality beyond petty gratifications and rehearsals of rage. A reality that is not, life that is not, the ecstasy of the insane. Alienation from the feminine. Transformation from human to troll. You really don’t know what love is.
So the trolls have taken a bit of power.  And as always it is as Ibsen said: “To live is to war with the trolls.”

Panopticon – “Resident”

Plebeian Grandstand – “Flail In the Bliss”

Iskra – “My Country Tis of Thy People You’re Dying” (Buffy Sainte-Marie cover)

Virus – “Steamer”

Matt Taibbi – Income and Criminal Justice Inequality (sound’s weird for the first couple minutes but it straightens out)

Timeghoul – “Rain Wound”

At noon on a rainy Friday last week, surrounded by sycophants, weaklings and crooks, Donald Trump assumed the Presidency of the United States of America. Narcissistic reality TV star, business failure, self-confessed sexual predator, boorish ignoramus who can’t even quote “Two Corinthians” to a Bible college correctly. “Rain Wound,” indeed.

Of course women know a thing or two about being lied to and manipulated by men, which is maybe why we saw the biggest one-day nationwide protest in the history of the United States on Saturday: an estimated 2.9 million people marching against Trump, demanding basic respect, dignity, and human rights. It’s been reported that thousands of people marched right here in Knoxville, hundreds of thousands in Chicago, 750,000 in Los Angeles, Washington of course, and who knows how many thousands more all over the world, I saw anti-Trump protests in London, Paris and Australia just from glancing at the news, we’ve had reports of protests on all seven continents including Antarctica. I want to send a very humble and at the same time very enthusiastic shout-out to everybody in Knoxville and around the world who marched in that and lifted up your voice to be heard, thank you. If anybody wants to find out more about that or get some suggestions on how you can carry that protest energy forward during the next 100 days, you can visit womensmarch.com.

Immolation – “Failures For Gods”

Nocturnus – “Visions From Beyond the Grave”

Portal – “Heirships”

Corporate coup d’etat. Interesting idea and I agree in principle, although the statement really overlooks the fact this takeover has been happening in slow-motion for quite some time (as Klein would probably admit if you asked her), but also that unlike a dictionary-definition coup, the advent of this administration has been accomplished legally. Just like any other corporate takeover.

Not to belabor the point, but we are talking about the self-prophecied “Drainer of the swamp” who berated Ted Cruz and Hilary Clinton for being in the pocket of Goldman Sachs, then a couple of months later appoints to his cabinet and transition team Steve Bannon (senior advisor), Steve Mnuchin (Sec. of the Treasury), Gary Cohn (National Economic Council Director), Anthony Scaramucci (staff advisor and liaison to govt agencies and businesses), Jay Clayton (Chair of the SEC), and Dina Habib Powell (Assistant to the President and Senior Counselor for Economic Initiatives), all have been employees of Goldman Sachs except for Clayton, who represented them as a lawyer. If anybody forgot who Goldman Sachs is, they like to take crooked government bailouts, screw people out of their homes, defraud their own investors and pay themselves bonuses in taxpayer money. Now they’re in the White House.

Donald Trump is just the latest in a long line of wealthy American hucksters.  And the powers behind the throne (high finance, white supremacy, the war hawks) are going to use him as “a blunt instrument” (Steve Bannon’s words) to further their agenda.  Just another spectacle to hide an uglier reality.

Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Century

“Americans are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. Now is a good time to do so. Here are twenty lessons from the twentieth century, adapted to the circumstances of today.

1. Do not obey in advance. Much of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then start to do it without being asked. You’ve already done this, haven’t you? Stop. Anticipatory obedience teaches authorities what is possible and accelerates unfreedom.

2. Defend an institution. Follow the courts or the media, or a court or a newspaper. Do not speak of “our institutions” unless you are making them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions don’t protect themselves. They go down like dominoes unless each is defended from the beginning.

3. Recall professional ethics. When the leaders of state set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become much more important. It is hard to break a rule-of-law state without lawyers, and it is hard to have show trials without judges.

4. When listening to politicians, distinguish certain words. Look out for the expansive use of “terrorism” and “extremism.” Be alive to the fatal notions of “exception” and “emergency.” Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary.

5. Be calm when the unthinkable arrives. When the terrorist attack comes, remember that all authoritarians at all times either await or plan such events in order to consolidate power. Think of the Reichstag fire. The sudden disaster that requires the end of the balance of power, the end of opposition parties, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book. Don’t fall for it.

6. Be kind to our language. Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone else does. Think up your own way of speaking, even if only to convey that thing you think everyone is saying. (Don’t use the internet before bed. Charge your gadgets away from your bedroom, and read.) What to read? Perhaps “The Power of the Powerless” by Václav Havel, 1984 by George Orwell, The Captive Mind by Czesław Milosz, The Rebel by Albert Camus, The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt, or Nothing is True and Everything is Possible by Peter Pomerantsev.

7. Stand out. Someone has to. It is easy, in words and deeds, to follow along. It can feel strange to do or say something different. But without that unease, there is no freedom. And the moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow.

8. Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle. The biggest wallet pays for the most blinding lights.

9. Investigate. Figure things out for yourself. Spend more time with long articles. Subsidize investigative journalism by subscribing to print media. Realize that some of what is on your screen is there to harm you. Bookmark PropOrNot or other sites that investigate foreign propaganda pushes.

10. Practice corporeal politics. Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on the screen. Get outside. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. Make new friends and march with them.

11. Make eye contact and small talk. This is not just polite. It is a way to stay in touch with your surroundings, break down unnecessary social barriers, and come to understand whom you should and should not trust. If we enter a culture of denunciation, you will want to know the psychological landscape of your daily life.

12. Take responsibility for the face of the world. Notice the swastikas and the other signs of hate. Do not look away and do not get used to them. Remove them yourself and set an example for others to do so.

13. Hinder the one-party state. The parties that took over states were once something else. They exploited a historical moment to make political life impossible for their rivals. Vote in local and state elections while you can.

14. Give regularly to good causes, if you can. Pick a charity and set up autopay. Then you will know that you have made a free choice that is supporting civil society helping others doing something good.

15. Establish a private life. Nastier rulers will use what they know about you to push you around. Scrub your computer of malware. Remember that email is skywriting. Consider using alternative forms of the internet, or simply using it less. Have personal exchanges in person. For the same reason, resolve any legal trouble. Authoritarianism works as a blackmail state, looking for the hook on which to hang you. Try not to have too many hooks.

16. Learn from others in other countries. Keep up your friendships abroad, or make new friends abroad. The present difficulties here are an element of a general trend. And no country is going to find a solution by itself. Make sure you and your family have passports.

17. Watch out for the paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching around with torches and pictures of a Leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-Leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the game is over.

18. Be reflective if you must be armed. If you carry a weapon in public service, God bless you and keep you. But know that evils of the past involved policemen and soldiers finding themselves, one day, doing irregular things. Be ready to say no. (If you do not know what this means, contact the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and ask about training in professional ethics.)

19. Be as courageous as you can. If none of us is prepared to die for freedom, then all of us will die in unfreedom.

20. Be a patriot. The incoming president is not. Set a good example of what America means for the generations to come. They will need it.”

–Timothy Snyder, Housum Professor of History, Yale University,
15 November 2016.

Bicameral Headbanger Episode 56

Here’s To the Protesters Segment

Discharge – “Protest and Survive”

Bikini Kill – “Rebel Girl”

We the People suffer from two spiritual diseases: the first is our staunch narcissisism, the second is our addiction to the image of perfection.

The reasons that you get into arguments or conflicts or fights with other people are the same reasons people have always argued and fought, power, vision, safety, resources, all of that is normal. But when you absolutely cannot believe that someone could possibly disagree with you, the reason you can’t understand them or hope to reason with them, the reason you can’t control the rage you feel when you are confronted by even the simplest of disagreements — that is because you as an American have been trained since your birth to cultivate a personality disorder.

That disorder is narcissism, and we all suffer from it. “A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem; erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one’s own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.” Lurching between delusions of grandeur and blinding fits of rage, unable to imagine or visualize the interests of others, preferring our own simple pleasures to the existential needs of others, not only on a personal level but also institutionally or nationally (patriotism, “life-boat ethics”) — that is narcissism.

The ideological environment that allows American narcissism to exist and to thrive is the illusion of perfection. Perfection starts with a centralized, metaphysically powerful hallucination, such as God, or Manifest Destiny, or the Blood of the Volk, or White Supremacy, or infinite Arbitrage Opportunities, or the hero principle (Stalin, Mao, Trump). That central hallucination takes on infinite significance (you can say anything about God because God is everything and he can do anything – the end of thought – you can say nothing correctly because God is indescribable – the end of innovation – and you must revere the mystery of God because he will kill you – the end of rebellion). Change itself is arrested, all movement is frozen. That’s you driving in your car for four hours a day, that’s spending your tiny allotment of lifetime in front of a television screen watching a bunch of nonsense that can never make you happy, that’s your push notifications and your filter bubbles and your patriotism and those funny blind spots at the corners of your eyes where babies are being killed by your tax dollars, where your chocolate bar pays for toxic waste in the water table. Where any change whatsoever to your routine is endlessly annoying.

Where you are alone. Where you are comfortable. Where you are warm. Where nothing changes. The illusion of perfection.

Perfection and Narcissism are the twin obstacles that are planted inside our minds and our bodies and keep us from actually doing anything to stop the crooks and the thieves and the racists that rule our society. America is an inverted totalitarianism, where instead of the state taking over and killing its opponents, the businesses took over and pacified its opponents, taught them to be “happy” and to “be good to yourself” and “live the good life” and hate anything that is not their own skin. They don’t have to kill you if you don’t care enough to fight. They don’t have to hurt you if you’ve already forgotten, if you’ve already given up your power.

We the American people have got to renounce our narcissism, renounce our perfectionism, and to put it very simply, fight back while there is still time.
